How to Build your own Rink
It’s Easy!
- Building outdoor rinks is growing fast, taken on by more and more Canadians every year. In today’s fast-paced world, it is easy to forget to be active. Grab your family and friends, and build your own rink. Take the time to have fun–and be healthy while you’re at it.
What you need
- All you need are a few inexpensive tools and a sense of adventure!
Tools:
- Level space (20x40 feet is a good size)
- Lumber (2x6 or 2x8 pieces are great)
- Screws
- Shovels
- Brushes
- Hose
- Tarp (must be 2 feet wider and two feet longer than your actual rink)
- About 2 hours, plus freezing time before use
Safety Tips
- As with any and all outdoor activities in the winter, make sure you are dressed warmly and appropriately for the weather, with something to cover your head and ears, comfortable footwear, and layers of clothing.
- Make sure your rink is completely frozen before skating on it.
- Always skate with a friend.

How to Build An Outdoor Rink
Introduction
The Recreation Facility Association of Nova Scotia (RFANS) at the request of local recreation departments will offer information sessions to community groups on How To Build An Outdoor Rink.
These sessions are open to anyone interested in building an outdoor rink.
Whether in your backyard or an empty tennis court or an open field, the information provided will give you the basics to get started and help you maintain the rink during the winter.
The sessions are designed to help community groups, schools, neighbourhood associations, municipalities, recreation committees and especially to those who just want to build a rink in their backyard.
What will I learn?
The intention of the sessions will be to provide you with information on how to best build and maintain your outdoor rink. Here is some of the information that will be covered:
- Site selection
- Materials
- Construction
- Maintenance
- Weather Factors
- Tips and Tricks
- And much, much more
Each person will receive a resource manual on "How to Build and Maintain Your Outdoor Rink", that contains much of the information that will be presented during the session.
Who should be there?
These sessions will be of interest to anyone who has or is considering building an outdoor rink. From the backyard rink to the community facility, everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend.
Community groups, recreation leaders, neighborhood associations, service groups, and individuals will all benefit from the information shared during the session.
How Much Does It Cost?
There is no cost for these sessions and all the materials will be supplied free of charge.
